Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2013

Wine Advocate: 94

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a powerful expression of Sangiovese. The wine offers a lot more density, heft and alcohol (recorded at 15%) than many of its peers from this slightly cooler vintage. The wine is fleshed out and rich with black cherry, plum, spice, tar and cola. You are also treated to a moment of cherry sweetness that adds texture and density to the finish. This pretty Riserva sports broad shoulders for easy pairings with grilled or baked meat dishes. Only 2,600 bottles were produced.

James Suckling: 94

This offers quite bright and fresh blueberry and plum aromas with an array of fresh red and purple berries. The palate has a bright, sweet core of fresh berry flavor and delivers a smooth and juicy feel. Drink or hold.

Vinous: 90

Bright deep red. The enticing nose combines strawberry, gingerbread, menthol and mineral notes. At once sweet and savory on the palate, with harmonious, vibrant acidity extending the red fruit flavors on the long, soft, edge-free finish. I like this wine’s intriguing combination of volume and crispness, but it strikes me as being slightly less well delineated than other recent vintages of Piancornello.
