Maison Moritz-Prado is a story of birth and growth. The tiny estate is a new one within a very historic wine region. Founded at the beginning of 2018, Moritz-Prado has been a dream come to fruition for Ghislain Moritz and Angela Prado, a young couple who decided to set down roots in Alsace. The domaine is one of the most exciting wineries to have launched in recent memory in the region.

A native of Alsace, though not from a winemaking family, Ghislain Moritz ultimately learned winemaking in Burgundy at the highly esteemed Chateau de Chamirey along with stints in Portugal and Romania. Angela Prado met Moritz while studying in France, gaining masters degrees in finance, she ultimately fell in love with the world of wine and also Ghislain. The two moved to the Carpathian mountains in Romania for an opportunity to make wine at the Avincis Winery, a dynamic estate where they fine tuned their craft and knowledge.

A combination of their mutual love for the beauty of Alsace itself and for the complex terroirs of the region led them back to Ghislain’s homeland in 2017 and after an exhaustive search, they set down roots 2018, high up in Albe, in the Vosge Mountains. The small property with soils comprised mainly of schist, 450 meters above sea level is farmed biodynamically. Here they grow Sylvaner, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir with a great focus on creating a robust cover crop to foster rich microbiology in the soils, to prevent erosion and to foster competition among the vines—forcing the roots to dive deeper. The harvests are always manual and they use only wild yeasts and spontaneous fermentation which can take a while—Ghislain and Angela follow the wine’s own rhythm. They like to use small vessels for fermentations, using a combination of stainless steel and ceramic amphorae.

The passionate couple are already turning heads in the Alsace with their complex, powerful yet elegant wines that are at once wild and refined. With an eye toward the future and a never-ending source of inspiration from their corner of Alsace, this already exceptional estate can only get better and better.
