Johann Donabaum Riesling Setzberg Smaragd 2013

Wine Advocate: 94pts

Sourced in one of the top sites in the Spitzer Graben, the 2013 Riesling Smaragd Setzberg starts floral and very aromatic on the lovely clear and slightly flinty nose, where cool mineral flavors mix with ripe and well-concentrated Riesling aromas. Full-bodied, precise and very elegant on the palate, this well-balanced, nobly expressive and lingering salty wine from gneiss and quartzite soils combines mineral complexity with freshness and finesse and ends as one of the finest Austrian Rieslings of the 2013 vintage. The aging potential should be excellent here. Stephan Reinhart, Apr 2015

Wine Spectator: 93pts

Very richly spiced, with a deep well of pear tart, apple cobbler and peach flavors that feature plenty of dried apricot accents. The finish offers concentrated pastry notes that feature hints of dried tarragon on a silky mouthfeel. Drink now through 2022. 270 cases made.

International Wine Report: 90pts

The 2013 Setzberg Riesling displays a wonderful golden color followed by aromas and flavors of lychee, white florals, flint and a touch of honeycomb. This is beautifully focused and balanced with a wonderful mix of fruit and acidity leading into the lively finish, marked by ripe fruits and minerals. (Best 2016-2025) - April, 2016 (JD)
